Hello, I’m Andrew.
Thanks for taking a look at my portfolio. To describe myself in the formal sense I’m a designer with over 10 years design industry experience, although I’ve never really been one for labelling myself with titles. Really I’m just a nice guy who likes helping people make things look good and work.
Where I started
After completing an HNC in Graphic Design I started working professionally 10 years ago as an artworker. My main role then would be layout documents, brochures and other printed materials, occasionally designing small pieces within clients brand guidelines. I would also do print preparation, where I learnt that attention to detail is imperative. I also started my freelance business along side working full time putting into practice what I had learnt to design and artwork material for friends.
The agency I worked for also did digital work as well as print, thanks to my web courses I’d completed and my self-teaching I understood enough HTML, CSS and then Flash to help out on that side too. I worked on amending websites, creating product demos and animations. Working alongside the head of digital I began to learn about the user-centred design process, accessibility standards for the web, creating information architecture and how important user research, personas and wireframing is when undertaking large scale website and app design and development.
More about me
I’ll turn my hand various disciplines and love to learn new things. I love working in photoshop, indesign and illustrator and more recently Sketch with Craft and Invision. I love scribbling with a pencil and that’s usually my starting place for designing and wireframing. I’m not a front-end developer but I can hold my own in talking HTML and CSS. I love WordPress too. Brought up watching The Clangers, Trapdoor and a little MTV I’ve always loved animation. I’ve worked in Flash and After Effects before as well as messing around with my own stop-motion projects.
I guess the web is where it’s at these days but give me a print project and I’m a happy man. I still love designing for print whether it be a small run of business cards or a mammoth 100 page plus publication. As I mentioned I started my career as an artworker and I still love doing that.
I’m passionate about my ideas, I enjoy working with other people, especially when they can teach me something new. On the other hand I also like to share my experience with colleagues and strive to always find the best solution for clients. Sometimes I like to work on my own too and go off to a quiet corner to scribble on a bit of paper – most of the time I’ll share the scribbles with the rest of my team!
In my current role I am lucky enough to have worked with a very diverse set of clients. To sum up some of the amazing projects I’ve been lucky enough to work on over the last few years…
Worked on the design of The British Monarchy website (the last one and did some work on a pitch to try to win it again). Helped an award winning florist develop her brand, printed materials and website. Single handedly designed and artworked a range of magazines for a youth brand as well as building their website to share their content digitally. Built a website for a local award winning musician also designing his record covers and other promotional materials. Worked on many print and digital projects for one of the leading multinational pharmaceutical companies in the world. Built a website for a Paralympic judo champion. Helped a company that builds gardens studios refresh their website and improve their web presence. Designed the website for the Leveson Inquiry. Worked on developing a brand identity for Hampshire County Council services. This and a whole load more….
